The Child Victims Act of New York is a significant legislation which is intended to help protect children by making it possible to bring past sexual abuse criminals to justice. It was overwhelmingly approved by the New York Assembly but has met with repeated opposition in the Senate. This piece of legislation would extend the current statute of limitations for prosecuting sex offenders to 10 years after a child has reached the age of 18. The act would also provide victims of sexual abuse with a one year window to come forward with any allegations for which the statute of limitations had expired. Sexual predators of children could be discovered and punished for their crimes and hopefully, prevented from committing any further sex crimes on children. Whether the criminal was a teacher, member of the clergy, priest, rabbi, Boy Scouts leader, family member or other individual, they should be punished for their crimes!
